Why You Should Use Pallet Racking Mesh

Why You Should Use Pallet Racking Mesh

When you’re setting up your warehouse racking system, you have a number of options available to you when it comes to the material you use for shelving. Using pallet racking mesh has a number of advantages, perhaps the greatest overall benefit being the greater flexibility it offers. In this blog, we’ll take a look at how pallet racking mesh can increase the options for your warehouse racking.

What Is Racking Mesh?

Racking mesh is an open weave mesh surface made from strong, durable metal that is placed over the support beams of your racking unit. The mesh surface helps to more evenly distribute the weight of the pallets across your support beams.

The Benefits of Racking Mesh

Racking mesh helps to distribute the weight of your pallets across the support beams and also prevents dislodged or fallen items from slipping between the beams and ending up on the warehouse floor. Particleboard shelving can be used to the same effect, however racking mesh has a number of advantages.

Cleaner & More Hygienic

When you use particle board for shelving, any spills from your stored items will end up on the shelves and stay there until it is noticed and cleaned up. Spills such as this can attract cockroaches, ants, and other pests, leading to contamination of stock, unhygienic conditions, and large-scale infestations that are expensive to deal with and sometimes impossible to eradicate completely.

With racking mesh, spills will fall through to the floor of the warehouse where they can be more easily cleaned away. Wire mesh shelves are easy to clean and will not need to be replaced anywhere near as often as other shelving options, reducing waste and cutting down on unnecessary spending. As well as reducing the incentive for pests (i.e., spilled matter), racking mesh also makes it much more difficult for them to hide, reducing the chances of an infestation. This makes mesh racking a particularly good choice for storage of food products and pharmaceuticals.

Visibility

Wooden shelving blocks out light, making your warehouse darker and requiring extensive lighting both night and day. It also blocks your view, making it more difficult for warehouse staff to see what is being stored on the shelves higher above them, which can be both an inconvenience and a safety hazard. Wire racking allows sunlight to pass through, offering improved visibility and reducing the need for artificial lighting.

Improved Fire Safety

Nothing is more disastrous, both financially and in terms of personal safety, than a warehouse fire. Compared to other kinds of shelving, mesh racking reduces the risk of fire in a number of important ways: unlike wood or particle board, mesh racking does not provide fuel for fire; and, unlike solid shelving made from wood or sheet metal, it does not prevent water from sprinkler systems reaching all areas of the warehouse when they are activated.

Durability

Mesh racking is much less susceptible to degradation than shelving made of particle board or wood, which can warp or sag over time. This means it does not need to be replaced anywhere near as often, reducing unnecessary waste.
